What Is Hospice?

Hospice is a special way of caring for people with a terminal illness who are facing end-of-life issues. Hospice focuses on care, not cure. Research shows that most people would prefer to spend their last days surrounded by their loved ones, and in control of their own care. The individual’s physical, emotional, and spiritual comfort is the most important goal of the hospice team. Those receiving hospice care are encouraged to remain as active and independent as possible for as long as they are able. Hospice services also support the family by providing counseling, education, and bereavement services.

Hospice is:

  • a comprehensive program that services the entire family unit
  • pallative care to insure that the patient is as physically, emotionally, and spiritually comfortable as possible
  • care for a range of end-stage diagnoses, such as heart disease, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and AIDS

Hospice strives to preserve the dignity of patients in their last days. Each patient and family unit is unique. The interdisciplinary model of care insures that the unique needs of the patient and family will be met.
